The most convenient and scenic route to Machu Picchu is by train to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. There are two main train companies, Peru Rail and Inca Rail, offering a variety of train types, schedules, and prices.
We recommend departing from and returning to the Urubamba train station, which is about 10-15 minutes from our hotel, followed by a 2 1/2 to 3-hour train ride. Peru Rail offers daily departures and returns on both the Vistadome train, featuring panoramic windows, and the high-end Sacred Valley train, which includes a gourmet lunch and dinner, both served with wine, as well as an observation bar car.
Due to limited departures from Urubamba, another option is a 40-minute car ride to Ollantaytambo, followed by a 1 1/2-hour train ride to Machu Picchu. Since almost all trains pass through Ollantaytambo, there are a wide range of train options and times available from both Peru Rail and Inca Rail. Additionally, from Poroy (outside Cusco), there is the luxury Hiram Bingham train by Peru Rail and the First Class and Private trains of Inca Rail.
Train options can be confusing and may sell out well in advance. Please contact us to book your train tickets in advance, as well as to arrange your entrance tickets, transportation, and optional guides.
